There are some who believe Caroline Wozniacki plays in too many tournaments, and that’s one of the reasons that, despite ascending to No. 1 in the world, she’s yet to win a Grand Slam event.

New Haven Open tournament director Anne Worcester, however, is more than happy that Wozniacki plays a busy schedule, particularly in August.

“She is a player that likes to prepare for a Grand Slam by playing, whereas some like to rest or just practice,” Worcester explained.

While Wozniacki is still looking for her first Grand Slam victory, she’s perfect in New Haven and will be looking to continue her unblemished mark this year at the New Haven Open at Yale (formerly known as Pilot Pen Tennis), to be held Aug. 18-27 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

Wozniacki, who’s been No. 1 in the world since the fall, is the three-time defending champion at the New Haven event and looks to tie Venus Williams’ record of four straight wins (1999-2002) at the tournament.

Wozniacki won a WTA-leading six events in 2010 and has won five times this year (Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston, Brussels and Copenhagen), but has developed a special bond with the people and fans in New Haven.

“She loves Yale,” Worcester said. “She’s gone on Yale tours, she has a special relationship with the football team. She wants to go to Yale.”

Wozniacki heads a talented field in an event that goes back to being women-only for the first time since 2004. She’ll be joined by world No. 8 Francesca Schiavone, No. 12 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 13 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, among others. In all, nine of the top 25 women’s players in the world will be at the event.
